WASHINGTON (NRB) – The United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments today in a crucial religious liberty case, Fulton v. City of Philadelphia. This significant civil rights case will determine whether or not a Catholic foster care agency in Philadelphia, Penn., will be disqualified from working with the city to place foster children in families. NRB, the nation’s preeminent association of Christian broadcasters and communicators, urges the Court to recognize the right of faith-based organizations to operate according to their sincerely held religious beliefs.

This is the first oral argument U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett heard as the newest member of the Court, after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Oct. 26. NRB supported Justice Barrett’s appointment.

In response to today’s oral arguments, the following statement was issued by Troy Miller, CEO of NRB:

“Faith-based organizations fulfill a vital role in caring for the vulnerable in our communities. As the father of four adopted children, I am especially concerned by the continued assault on the good work of adoption agencies. It is our desire to see the Supreme Court recognize the right of faith-based organizations to operate according to their cherished religious beliefs.”

According to The Family Research Council, an NRB member organization, “Allowing religious discrimination against faith-based foster care agencies would not just be a blow to the constitutionally-protected right of religious liberty. It would also be detrimental to the already overburdened foster care system.”
