NRB Applauds Introduction of the Local Radio Freedom Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NRB)—A bipartisan coalition of 119 members of the House of Representatives introduced a resolution in Congress on February 6 expressing their opposition to “any new performance fee, tax, royalty or other charge” on local broadcast radio stations. The Local Radio Freedom Act (LRFA) expresses the opposition of Congress to any legislation that would impose new performance fees on local radio broadcasters.
Troy A. Miller, President & CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) association, has issued the following statement:
“There’s never been a more important time to maintain access for Christian communicators, and one way to do that is to help protect a business environment that allows small, local, and independent radio to thrive. Our members not only minister to the spiritual welfare of America through Christian music, talk, and teaching, but they actively seek to meet the needs of the community through service and charitable activities. We’re committed to protecting their ability to do so, and the NRB thanks the 119 bipartisan members of Congress who have already expressed their support for local radio by cosponsoring the Local Radio Freedom Act.”
Noelle Garnier, NRB’s Director of Public Policy and Communications, stated:
“The recording industry continues to insist on a massive government expansion into the music licensing space and a Congressional handout benefiting the three major record labels that control more than seventy percent of recorded music. I’m delighted that 119 members of Congress—so far—have agreed from across the aisle that local radio deserves better. It’s an honor to advocate for our incredible NRB members and the industry they represent.”
The NRB encourages its members to contact their representatives and urge them to support the LRFA, protect local broadcasters from burdensome performance royalties, and preserve a free market in music licensing.
