NRB’s John Milton Project Amens Senators’ Letter on Facebook Censorship

WASHINGTON (NRB) – Four U.S. Senators have signed a scathing letter to Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg stating that, “Yet again, Facebook’s pattern of censorship has reared its ugly head.” The letter detailed Facebook’s use of pro-abortion “fact-checkers” in order to block, as “false” information, two videos produced by Live Action and its President, Lila Rose. The videos included statements by board-certified neonatologist Dr. Kendra Kolb that abortions are not medically necessary. Facebook not only suppressed Live Action’s website and Rose’s Facebook page; it warned users that the posting was “false news.”

Craig Parshall, NRB’s General Counsel and the founding Director of its John Milton Project for Digital Free Speech, applauded the letter from Senators Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), and Mike Braun (R-Ind.). “For nearly a decade, the John Milton Project for Digital Free Speech has documented the consistent pattern of viewpoint censorship of this kind by Big Tech companies like Facebook, and urged that action be taken,” Parshall said. “It is heartening to see these stalwart Senators taking up this cause.”

This week the John Milton Project released Parshall’s report detailing Silicon Valley’s pattern of opinion suppression practiced on their monolithic digital platforms. The report, titled “Chokepoint: Solving Big Tech’s Grip over Free Speech,” makes the case that Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Apple are information monopolies, and have all committed viewpoint suppression against lawful opinions that they don’t like, including Christian content. The report also suggests a constitutional basis for government action against the companies, and a template for how that could be done. Several of those companies are now under investigation for possible violation of antitrust law.
