Manassas, VA – Dr. Jay Alan Sekulow, Chief Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), will speak during the Saturday General Session at NRB 2011 on February 26th.

“We look forward to hearing from this gifted legal scholar who has accomplished so much to protect and defend our First Amendment freedoms,” commented NRB President & CEO Dr. Frank Wright.

Dr. Sekulow directs the ACLJ as an educational institution and one of the most prestigious law firms in the nation, with their primary focus on constitutional law. He is also the Chief Counsel of the European Center for Law and Justice (ECLJ), and the ECLJ has appeared before the European Court of Human Rights on a broad range of religious freedom and human rights issues. In the United States, Dr. Sekulow has served as a faculty member for the Office of Legal Education at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he instructed Assistant United States Attorneys and investigators in the First Amendment issues associated with the prosecution of obscenity. He has also presented oral argument before the U.S. Supreme Court in numerous cases in defense of constitutional freedoms. In McConnell v. FEC, Dr. Sekulow argued that the constitutional rights of young people should remain protected; the high court unanimously concurred, guaranteeing that minors can participate in political campaigns. More recently, in Pleasant Grove City v. Summum, Dr. Sekulow secured a unanimous First Amendment decision clearing the way for governments to accept permanent monuments of their choosing - including Ten Commandments monuments - in public parks.

The National Law Journal has twice named Dr. Sekulow one of the "100 Most Influential Lawyers" in the United States.  He is also among a distinguished group of attorneys known as "The Public Sector 45" named by The American Lawyer. That designation, says the magazine, represents "45 young lawyers outside the private sector whose vision and commitment are changing lives." The Legal Times named Dr. Sekulow one of "The 90 Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Last 30 Years," recognizing him for "fighting to expand liberties and protect civil rights." Business Week said the ACLJ is "the leading advocacy group for religious freedom," and Dr. Sekulow's work on the issue of judicial nominees - including possible vacancies at the Supreme Court - has received extensive news coverage, including a front page story in The Wall Street Journal

As a popular guest on nationally televised news programs on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, CNBC, and PBS, Dr. Sekulow provides insight and analysis on a wide variety of issues. He frequently contributes articles and commentary to national publications, and is often quoted in the nation's leading newspapers, including USA Today, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and The Washington Times

Dr. Sekulow graduated cum laude from Mercer University, receiving both a bachelor's degree and Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from that institution. During law school, he served on the Mercer Law Review as an editorial staff member.  Following graduation, Dr. Sekulow served as a tax trial attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  In that capacity, Dr. Sekulow prepared and brought to trial tax cases on behalf of the United States Department of the Treasury in United States Tax Court.  He received a Ph.D. from Regent University, where his dissertation focused on American Legal History, and he is the author of numerous publications and law articles.

Dr. Sekulow serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for The Supreme Court Historical Society in Washington, D.C., and he is on the NRB Board of Directors and the NRB Network Board of Directors.
