Earlier this year, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) announced his retirement after this session of Congress. Not only did this set off a race for his Los Angeles-area Congressional seat, but also for his spot as top Democrat on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) would be in line for the post in order of seniority, and he is actively courting support. However, Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), the lead Democrat on the Communications & Technology Subcommittee, is also attempting to win the top Democrat spot on the full committee. This battle took an interesting turn in recent days as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made the unusual move of publicly entering the fray and endorsing her California colleague, Ms. Eshoo. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who has been at odds with Leader Pelosi in the past, then stated his support for Mr. Pallone to reporters. A decision will not be made by the Democratic Caucus in the House until after the November mid-term elections.
