Great Commission Summit Shows How Gospel is Being Proclaimed Internationally

Steve Doulass at Proclaim 17ORLANDO, Fla. (NRB) – The Great Commission Summit at Proclaim 17, the NRB International Christian Media Convention in Orlando, shed light on how Christian ministries are using available technologies to take the Gospel to the nations.

Speakers at the February 27 summit, which was preceded by a reception for Convention attendees, included Cru President Steve Douglass and Rita El Mounayer, Chief Channel Officer and Deputy CEO for SAT-7 Media Services, Ltd., in Nicosia, Cyprus. Worship was led by Erskin Anavitarte and Hannah Kerr.

During his presentation, Douglass shared eight categories of “How God Is Moving Today.”

Engagement of unengaged, unreached people groups. Douglass said that in 2005 there were 639 unengaged large people groups (more than 100,000 people). Today, six of the 639 are left unengaged. Of the groups that were smaller than 100,000, 1,425 more have been engaged.

Scripture translation. Of the world’s 7,000 languages, 3,200 already have enough of the Bible translated to engage as a church. Another 2,000 languages have someone working on Bible translation, leaving only 1,800 languages where nothing is occurring.

Douglass said he believes that there will be enough Bible translations for the church to function in every language within the next 10 years.

Jesus Film. Douglass shared that the Jesus Film, the most translated film in history by far, recently finished its 1,500th translation. Seven billion people have been exposed to the Gospel through the film, with 350 million indicated decisions for Christ since 1979.

Orality. Two-thirds of the Earth’s population can’t be discipled through writing; it has to be pictorial, audio, or audio-visual. Douglass said a lot of progress has been made in this area in the past 15 years, including the creation of the International Orality Network and the work of OneStory, MegaVoice, YouVersion, and Faith Comes By Hearing.

Church planting. Douglass shared that 6-7 years ago it was believed that there were about five million churches on Earth. The Global Alliance for Church Multiplication believes five million more churches can be planted by the end of 2020, with about one million churches already being planted so far. The Jesus Film, which is used in about 60 percent of church plants outside of the First World, reports that another 1.1 million churches have been planted by its partners in the past 6-7 years.

Multiplication. Douglass gave an example of how one movement group started by a college student in Colombia has multiplied into 160 groups on 80 college campuses in 20 cities in that country.

Prayer. “Prayer is a precursor to God moving,” Douglass said. “When we see a lot of prayer, we can be pretty sure God is going to do something.”

Digital. Douglass estimated there have been about 1 billion visits to digital evangelistic sites in the past 10 years

During her presentation, El Mounayer answered the question, “Is There Any Hope for the Middle East?”

According to the Lebanon native, the biggest problem in the Middle East is hopelessness. “My business is changing the news to be good news,” she added.

El Mounayer said she knows there is hope for the Middle East each time:

  • She sees Lebanese people opening their homes to Syrian refugees despite their history of being enemies.
  • She sees Algerian Christians wanting SAT-7 to broadcast their church services despite the dangers of persecution. “They want the whole world to know that they are Christian,” she said.
  • She sees Egyptian Christians showing love to those who are burning their churches.

The summit concluded with an International Forum featuring El Mounayer; Arnold Enns, President of COICOM in La Paz, Bolivia; Hannu Haukka, President/CEO of IRR-TV, Great Commission Media in Helsinki, Finland; and Ashvin Dhyriam, President of Good News Television and Vice President of the India Christian Media Association in Chennai and New Delhi, India. Ron Harris, President/Founder of MEDIAlliance International, served as moderator.

The summit was sponsored by Zion Oil & Gas, Inc., MegaVoice, Cru, and Great Commission Media Ministry.
