NRB Testifies At Senate Hearing Regarding ENDA

Craig ParshallYesterday, Craig Parshall, NRB’s Senior Vice President & General Counsel, testified at the Senate “HELP” Committee (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions) hearing in opposition to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2011 (ENDA), a bill that would prohibit employers from making employment decisions based on a person’s actual or perceived “sexual orientation or gender identity.” Parshall stated in his testimony that “requiring discrimination laws to adequately protect and accommodate the religious liberties of faith groups is not a mere legislative prerogative: it is a constitutional mandate.” He argued that Sec. 6 of the bill which purports to grant a “religious exemption” for faith-based employers would accomplish little to provide meaningful protection against employment discrimination claims by homosexuals or “transgender” persons. Parshall previously testified in both the Senate and the House of Representatives in 2009 against the same bill.
