Editor's Note: This year, NRB will be recognizing a record number of organizations with the NRB Milestone Award, which is presented each year at the annual NRB Convention in recognition of pioneers in Christian communications who have demonstrated exemplary service in the industry for five decades or more. In recognition of their accomplishment, Milestone Award honorees will be spotlighted in each weekly edition of NRB Today leading up to the NRB 2013 Convention & Exposition. This week, we recognize Global Outreach Mission. Here is their story:
Global Outreach Mission (GOM) is a missionary sending organization that was founded in 1943 in Toronto, Canada, by Dr. James Stewart, who was holding evangelistic campaigns in Europe after World War II. It was later established in Buffalo, NY, in 1944.
Since its foundation, GOM has served all these years as an evangelistic and church planting ministry. Under the evangelism category, GOM has several ministries including medical missions, community development, clean water, Christian education, orphanages, and radio ministries.
GOM broadcasts to the French speaking world including Europe, Northern Africa, and the Caribbean Islands through La Voix de l’Evangile, which emanates from the Marseilles area of France.
It also has a Quebec broadcast produced in the Montreal area of Canada, as well as a Bengali broadcast produced in Kolkata, India, that reaches West Bengal, India, and Bangladesh.
Canada’s National Bible Hour, which GOM also produces, is heard across Canada and the northern U.S. This broadcast was founded in Calgary, Alberta, in 1925 by William Aberhart. Through this broadcast, Ernest C. Manning was led to the Lord.
Both Aberhart and Manning became the Premier of the Province of Alberta. Manning became the speaker on the broadcast in 1948.
In 1989, Manning realized he could no longer carry the responsibility of the broadcast. As a result, he contacted Dr. James Blackwood, who became the host of the broadcast on January 1, 1990.
To this day, GOM continues to use Manning’s messages on the broadcast.
In February 2010, Brian Albrecht became host of the broadcast, and today GOM holds firm to the belief that the mission field of every Christian is the world. Home and foreign missions, the ministry asserts, are natural partners in Christian ministry.
Through evangelism, GOM's goal is to plant local churches and develop national leadership.
