NRB Member Spotlight: Massanutten Broadcasting Company

DaveEshlemanMassanutten Broadcasting Company, Inc., is based in Broadway, VA, and presently owns and operates two radio stations in the state – WBTX-AM and WLTK-FM.

WBTX-AM signed on the air at 12:28 p.m. on May 18, 1972, after a long journey by Co-Founder and now Owner Dave Eshleman, who became interested in starting a Christian station in the Harrisonburg, VA, area in the mid-1960s.

The original application was filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on May 31, 1967. However, due to a competing application filed in Charlottesville for the same frequency, the application process was delayed for four years. It was not until September 1971 that the construction permit was granted and the building process could begin.

The approval notice from the FCC finally came the following year.

The WBTX format began with Christian programming in the morning and evening and easy listening music during the middle part of the day. A change to a full Christian format was made in the early 1980s.  The current format features a select group of programs with solid biblical teaching and Southern Gospel music.  WBTX is now broadcasting 24/7 with a power of 5000 watts during the daytime and 36 watts overnight.

WLTK-FM, meanwhile, went on the air in December 1989 with a format of contemporary Christian music. It operates at 102.9 and since February of 2010 has been leased by the K-LOVE radio network as their affiliate in the central Shenandoah Valley.

The Massanutten Broadcasting Company believes the fact that WBTX and WLTK are on the air today, with their current formats, is a tribute to God providing through His people, and is a story of His Amazing Grace.
