A window for non-profit educational organizations to file for new Low Power FM (LPFM) radio stations is coming this autumn. The FCC this week announced procedures and requirements for applying in this window, which will be open October 15-29.
Pleased by the announcement, FCC Acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn took the opportunity to “encourage community groups to add new and diverse voices to their local broadcast communities…. This will create a broader LPFM service to augment the airwaves, so I encourage applicants to use the full resources and tools available from the Commission, such as the LPFM Channel Finder, to assist in their applications.”
Commissioner Ajit Pai similarly stated, “Enabling new low-power FM stations to begin broadcasting is critical to advancing the Commission's diversity goals, and I encourage interested organizations across the country to take advantage of this opportunity.”
