Chuck Colson: He Finished Well

Chuck Colson speaking at NRB 2010Influential author, speaker, radio commentator, and NRB award winner, Chuck Colson passed away on April 21, 2012. The Prison Fellowship founder authored several books that have shaped Christian thinking on a variety of subjects, such as Born Again, and he also founded NRB member ministries BreakPoint and the Colson Center for Christian Worldview with the intent of equipping Christians to understand, live out, and defend the Faith in the public square. Colson received the prestigious NRB Hall of Fame Award in 2010 for his devotion to ministering to the incarcerated in the name of Christ and shining the light of Truth into a darkening culture. He made an invaluable contribution to the field of Christian communications and exhibited the highest standards and evidence of faithfulness in Christ. NRB President & CEO Dr. Frank Wright says of Chuck Colson: "Chuck was like the lamplighter of days gone by. Even when you could not see him working, you could see where he had been by the glow of the many lives he touched."

In 1993, Colson was awarded the prestigious Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion; his one million dollar prize money—along with all his speaking fees and book royalties—were donated to Prison Fellowship.  In 2008, President Bush conferred on him the second highest civilian award of the U.S. government, the Presidential Citizen Medal for his humanitarian work with Prison Fellowship. He served in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Captain.

NRB joins others in praying for Chuck’s family and ministries. He is an example of how God can transform a life and use it for His glory.  In an age of confusion and controversy over the role of the Church in addressing the great issues of the day, Chuck Colson seems to have come as close as any Christian leader in the last century in maintaining a pitch-perfect balance; boldly and insightfully applying Biblical principles to matters of public policy bearing on family, faith and freedom, while never retreating from his evangelistic mission to unceasingly share the Gospel of Christ, especially to those imprisoned by desperate circumstances.
