A Nod to FM Chips in Cell Phones

Sixteen House Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Chairman Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) recently sent a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski noting the importance of radio to African-Americans and suggesting a hearing on the value of active FM chips in mobile phones. 

After noting that 241 million Americans and 97 percent of African-Americans rely on radio, the Representatives declared, “Having widely available mobile devices that are broadcast ready is a critical component of any next-generation wireless alerting solution. Radio-enabled mobile phones would save lives, including the approximately 87 percent of African Americans who own a cell phone and consider it a vital part of their lives.”
