iNRB to Return to NRB 2024 Convention

The Intercollegiate National Religious Broadcasters (iNRB) offers a dedicated forum at the NRB International Christian Media Convention for college students with interests in broadcasting, journalism, and communications. iNRB provides opportunities for college students to practice, polish, and refine their media skills alongside peers to help prepare them for work in various media industries.

“The concept of iNRB aims to unite faculty and students from Christian universities, fostering a collaborative environment for the exchange of ideas and goals,” said iNRB Chair Sharyn Robertson, Bob Jones University department head of cinematic arts. “Our objective is to enhance this collaboration in various practical ways, particularly during conventions, providing like-minded individuals with opportunities to collaborate and glean insights from one another.”

College students enrolled and attending an NRB member school can join iNRB with a no-cost student membership, which lasts one academic year. Students and faculty from member schools receive a range of benefits including internship referrals, numerous networking opportunities, and a free Convention registration and access to all Convention sessions and the exhibition.

iNRB members can take part in exclusive programs and events for students and educators at the NRB Convention:

  • Meet & Greet Mixer
  • Awards Presentation
  • Student Education Sessions
  • Internship Discussions
  • Academic Innovation Exchange for faculty
  • Student & Faculty Feedback Session
  • Timed competitions (“Challenges”) for student teams from qualified full-member schools

Full member schools with communications or film programs or student-run broadcasts qualify to send student teams to compete in the Challenges, held onsite at the annual NRB Convention. The 12-hour Audio Challenge, 12-hour News Challenge, and 24-hour Film Challenge allow students to test their skills against the clock in a competitive environment. Industry professionals judge entries. Top performers receive certificates and a resumé-building accolade. Winning schools receive an engraved award.

“iNRB provides the opportunity to connect with fellow emerging communicators specializing in TV, radio, or film. Engaging in friendly competition among peers within your chosen field encourages you to continuously strive for excellence,” said Robertson. “Additionally, the annual iNRB convention offers a platform to network with established professionals in the industry.”

Kornel Gerstner, Liberty University digital media and journalism professor and an iNRB Committee member, highlights the importance of mentorship and networking: “Current and future iNRB members could be the next NRB leaders. We have a great opportunity to mentor our creative students and introduce them to the current Christian industry and the professionals through iNRB and NRB conventions.”

Gerstner was a 2004 iNRB participant and award winner while an undergraduate student at Moody University.

“My trip to receive the award at the NRB Convention in Charlotte, N.C., opened my mind and widened my interest. I went there not really knowing what to expect. However, I [met] experienced Christian media/industry professionals and networked with other schools and students,” said Gerstner.

“iNRB sessions are a great opportunity for like-minded students and faculty to connect, worship together, meet new upcoming artists, and brainstorm together on how Christians can use technology to further God’s Kingdom and fulfill the Great Commission,” Gerstner continued.

At the 2024 NRB Convention, faculty will also meet for The Academic Innovation Exchange to share perspective on best practices in the classroom to improve student outcomes. A guest speaker, an educator from an NRB member school, will speak on a timely topic.

“As affordable technology advances, media ministries will have even greater opportunities to reach the lost and strengthen the church and accomplish the mission,” said Gerstner. “iNRB is here to bridge the gap and usher in the next generation of Christian leaders who will utilize technology for God’s purpose and share His story creatively.”

Christian colleges and universities are eligible to apply for a full NRB membership. For the 2024 NRB Convention, faculty and students from all full-member educational institutions can register and attend the annual NRB Convention at no cost. Only full-member schools that offer a communications or film program or a student-led broadcast can register student teams for the Challenges. Click here or email membership@nrb.org to learn more.
