The National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) honors the life and legacy of Robert “Bob” Straton. A longtime Christian communicator and servant-leader, his faithful work advanced Gospel broadcasting and encouraged fellow ministers in media.

From 1994 to 1997, Bob served as Chairman of the NRB Executive Committee, providing steady leadership and encouragement to fellow broadcasters. His commitment to excellence in Christian media and his heart for sharing the gospel left a lasting imprint on NRB and the broader broadcasting community.

A gifted musician and communicator, Bob began his ministry career at just 17, joining evangelist Dr. Percy B. Crawford’s quartet in Philadelphia. He sang weekly on radio and the live television program “Youth on the March” and traveled internationally sharing the Gospel through music. It was during those early years at Pinebrook Bible Conference that he met his beloved wife, Barbara Parker Straton, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage.

Bob’s career reflected a lifelong dedication to using media for ministry. He worked in public relations and sales at Channel 17, served on Ross Rhoad’s team with Church Centered Evangelism, and partnered with Dr. Stephen F. Olford at Calvary Baptist Church in New York City where he produced weekly radio and television programs. For 32 years, Bob served at Walter Bennett Communications, eventually as president, helping bring the messages of pastors and Bible teachers to audiences nationwide.

Those who knew Bob remember him as an encourager. He was joyful, kind, and deeply devoted to Jesus Christ. His love for people, music, and ministry reflected his unwavering faith and desire to point others to the Savior he served.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

We give thanks for the life and witness of Robert Hillyer Straton, whose impact on Christian broadcasting will continue to inspire generations to come.
