Dr. George Sweeting, a prominent voice within the evangelical movement and former president of Moody Bible Institute, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, at the age of 99.

Dr. Sweeting’s life embodied a relentless passion for sharing the Gospel. From his early days as a youth group leader to his international evangelistic campaigns, he ignited a fire in countless hearts. His leadership at Moody not only propelled institutional growth but extended the reach of its ministry through innovative programs and media ventures.

“Dr. Sweeting’s leadership at Moody Radio helped shape the landscape of Christian broadcasting,” said Troy A. Miller, President and CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB). “He understood the power of radio to reach hearts and minds across the nation, and his commitment to excellence in programming continues to inspire us today.”

Born into a Christian family in 1924, Sweeting felt a call to ministry from a young age. Soon after graduating from Moody Bible Institute in 1945, Sweeting married his childhood sweetheart Hilda. Having battled cancer during his senior year, he was told he might not have children. Despite this prognosis, he and Hilda were blessed with four sons. He served as a pastor, honed his evangelistic skills as a traveling preacher, and eventually returned to Moody as an associate pastor.

In 1966, Dr. Sweeting became pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago, bringing his creativity and dedication to evangelism. He later served as president of Moody Bible Institute from 1971 to 1987, overseeing a period of significant growth. During his tenure, he launched new radio programs, publications, and educational initiatives, including the master’s degree program and satellite evening schools. Notably, he spearheaded the expansion of Moody’s Chicago campus.

Dr. Sweeting remained active in ministry well into his retirement, serving as a director of senior adult ministry at his local church until 2018. He continued to inspire others through his writings, with his final book, Full Circle, published in 2022.

Dr. Sweeting’s legacy extends far beyond his achievements. Dr. Sweeting is survived by his wife, Hilda, and sons George, James, Donald, and Robert, along with multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His final written words, a testament to his lifelong commitment, declare: “I yield my best and all to be used by the Lord Jesus Christ.” Dr. George Sweeting’s life serves as an inspiration to all who seek to follow Christ.

Sweeting served on the NRB Board of Directors from 2003–2006. He received the NRB William Ward Ayer Award in 1988. Moody Radio, under the Moody Bible Institute, has been an NRB member since 1961.
