Against the harrowing backdrop of Ukraine’s ongoing war, a ray of hope shines brightly through the documentary “In God’s Hand.” This docufilm, directed by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Andy Costa and produced by NRB member Susie Jennings, founder and president of Operation Care International, delves into the heart-wrenching humanitarian crisis that has left over 100,000 orphans in its wake.
The film came about after Operation Care International sent a team to Ukraine to provide solace and support to the displaced families and orphans of war-torn Ukraine.
“Operation Care International didn’t plan on making a documentary. One of our mission trip friends, Andy Costa, who came with us to shoot a few videos, saw so many miracles on the trip [that] he felt God putting it on his heart to make a documentary film about the trip,” said Operation Care International director Mike Tirone.
The award-winning film was screened and promoted at the 2023 NRB International Christian Media Convention in Orlando, Fla.
“‘In God’s Hand’ is a story of trusting God and allowing Him to stretch your faith,” said Tirone. “How important it is to share the good news of Jesus amid war. People wanted and needed to hear about the hope of Jesus and people are coming to the faith.”
Director Andy Costa, known for skillfully creating cinematic experiences on real-world budgets, brings his 25 years of filmmaking expertise to this project. His career has encompassed large-scale productions and small independent ventures, but “In God’s Hand” holds a unique place in his portfolio.
The half-hour documentary, released in March 2023, paints a vivid picture of the dire circumstances faced by these children and families, their lives upended by the conflict that has ravaged their homeland. In the midst of such darkness, “In God’s Hand” chronicles Operation Care’s mission to provide not only physical aid but also spiritual sustenance to those in need.
“Operation Care continues to follow up with our ministry partners on the ground in Ukraine, providing for their needs,” said Tirone. “‘In God’s Hand’ is a story of walking by faith, listening to God and showing His love to those who are hurting.”
