During August Recess, Bring Local Advocacy to Life

NRB | August 8, 2025 | Advocacy

With Congress on its annual August recess, Washington may feel quieter, but that doesn’t mean advocacy is on pause. In fact, this month presents a unique and powerful opportunity for Christian broadcasters to engage directly with lawmakers while they’re home in their districts.

This is the time when relationships are built, awareness is raised, and local voices carry significant weight. Whether it’s protecting AM radio, defending religious freedom, or safeguarding our ability to speak truth through media, every interaction with a policymaker matters.

Here are several practical ways NRB members can stay engaged and help amplify the voice of Christian media during this critical window:

Invite policymakers into your stations.
  • Give them a behind-the-scenes tour. Let them meet your team, see your operations, and understand the full impact of your work.
  • Invite them on-air for a local program or public affairs show. Ask about their priorities, committee work, or how they’re serving constituents.
  • NRB members, do you need help booking a member of Congress? NRB can assist. Contact policy@nrb.org to get in touch directly with our Office of Public Policy team.
Show up at town halls.

Attend local town hall meetings and introduce yourself as a Christian broadcaster and community leader. A personal introduction can lay the groundwork for lasting relationships.

Publish op-eds or letters to the editor.

Encourage your leadership or hosts to write op-eds in local newspapers or online outlets about the value of Christian broadcasting, the importance of free speech, or specific legislation like the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. These pieces often catch the eye of lawmakers and their staff.

Use social media strategically.

Tag your federal and state lawmakers in posts about community events or station-led initiatives. If you’re hosting an event, invite elected officials to attend and see your impact firsthand.

Feature national voices on-air.

Want a broader perspective on media policy? NRB’s leadership is available for interviews. Reach out to the NRB Communications team to schedule President & CEO Troy A. Miller, General Counsel Michael Farris, or VP of Public Policy Nic Anderson to join your program. Contact us at presscenter@nrb.org.

Partner with your state broadcasters association (SBA).

SBAs often have local advocacy efforts or events in motion—especially as states consider regulations that impact religious and local broadcasting. Aligning with them strengthens your voice. Click here to view the full SBA list.

Keep the AM radio PSAs airing.

If you operate an AM or FM radio station, continue broadcasting the 30-second PSAs in support of the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. These spots are voiced by Christian media leaders and NRB members. With lawmakers and staff in their home districts, this is the perfect time to remind them how vital AM radio remains. Download the PSAs here.

The slower pace in Washington gives local voices the chance to rise. Let’s use this August to ensure our message is heard loud and clear.
