NRB Urges Action for Persecuted Believers

Manassas, VA–In light of ongoing violence against Christians and other religious minorities around the world, including the current effort by Islamist forces to viciously eradicate the Christians of Iraq, Dr. Jerry A. Johnson, President & CEO of NRB, today called on government and faith leaders in the United States to stand up against this barbarism.

"The stories and the images of abuse and violence are real.  They are happening now and cannot be ignored," stated Dr. Johnson. "The White House and Congress must take steps to halt this wicked persecution, and leaders of churches and ministries in the United States must be a loud voice on behalf our Christian brothers and sisters, and indeed any religious minority, in the Middle East and around the world."

Dr. Johnson is a co-signer of the "Pledge of Solidarity & Call to Action" on behalf of Christians and other religious minorities in Egypt, Iraq, and Syria. The Pledge, spurred by Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) and Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA), highlights: "Now facing an existential threat to their presence in the lands where Christianity has its roots, the Churches in the Middle East fear they have been largely ignored by their coreligionists in the West… American religious leaders need to pray and speak with greater urgency about this human rights crisis."  NRB also supports Senate Resolution 530, authored by Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), condemning the violence against Christians and other religious minorities by Islamist forces in Iraq and calling on the President to take concrete steps to help those persecuted.

Earlier this year, the NRB Board of Directors, a body of approximately a hundred key leaders among Christian communicators, unanimously adopted a statement urging the Obama Administration "to actively advocate to the international community the principles of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution."

"I am thankful for the freedoms endowed to humanity by God, as manifested in the Declaration of Independence and embodied in the Bill of Rights," commented Dr. Johnson. "We often focus, as we should, on defending the integrity of the freedoms of religion and speech here at home. But we must also work diligently to see that they are respected abroad."
