Manassas, VA – On Thursday, September 15th, NRB will unveil the first report of the John Milton Project for Religious Free Speech at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. This groundbreaking report concludes an 18-month study headed by NRB Sr. Vice President & General Counsel Craig Parshall, evaluating the practices and policies of new media technology companies to determine the risk of religious viewpoint censorship occurring on their platforms. Specifically, the report highlights the practices of Apple and its iTunes App Store, Google, Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, as well as Internet service providers AT&T, Comcast and Verizon. Parshall calls the threat “ominous.”
“Sixty-seven years ago, NRB was founded in the fires of adversity when government regulations combined with policy decisions by major networks made it virtually impossible for Evangelical ministers to buy radio airtime,” said Dr. Frank Wright, NRB President & CEO. “Today around the world, millions of individuals use radio, television, and the Internet to listen to the broadcasts, live web streaming, and podcasts of NRB member organizations. If Christian content and worldview programing are censored by new media platforms, the Good News of the Gospel could become one more casualty of institutionalized religious discrimination.”
The September 15th Press Announcement and report release will be made at 10:00 a.m. in the Zenger Room of the National Press Club, followed immediately by a panel discussion of experts who will examine the findings of the first report of the John Milton Project for Religious Free Speech. Panelists will include Harold Furchtgott-Roth, former FCC Commissioner and Founder/Director of the Center for Economics of the Internet at the Hudson Institute; Craig Parshall, NRB Sr. Vice President & General Counsel; Colby May, Senior Counsel and Director of the Washington, DC, office of the American Center for Law and Justice, and a representative from the Liberty University School of Law. Mr. Brian Walsh, Executive Director of the American Religious Freedom Program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, will moderate.
