ENDA Still Chilling to Freedom

Manassas, VAResponding to news reports highlighting Senator Rob Portman’s (R-OH) wariness of inadequate religious freedom protections in the recently re-introduced Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a favorite bill of the LGBT lobby, the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) reiterated its long standing religious freedom objections to this bill.

“The current version of ENDA contains the same convoluted, so-called religious exemption language, as in prior years,” notes Craig Parshall, NRB Senior Vice President & General Counsel, “and that language is an open invitation for endless litigation and paltry protection for religious employers.”

Mr. Parshall has testified multiple times in Congress on ENDA, most recently in 2012 before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, voicing NRB’s objections to the bill’s failure to create a safe harbor for religious organizations and ministries.

ENDA would assault the constitutional rights of faith-based organizations and lead to a chilling effect in religious communities,” continues Mr. Parshall. “The repeated failure to cure this statutory language problem suggests a less-than-good faith effort on the part of the proponents of ENDA to protect fundamental religious liberties.”
