A recent study asserts that restrictions on religion are rising around the world, including in the United States. In a report titled “Rising Tide of Restrictions on Religion,” the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life noted that religion has faced growing challenges from both government and private entities. While nations such as Afghanistan, Egypt, Russia, and Saudi Arabia are highlighted among those at the high end of Pew’s indices for government restrictions and social hostilities, the U.S. does not escape notice moving higher on these charts to levels of moderate concern. Notably, this study analyzes the religious environment as of mid-2010, before numerous recent challenges, including the HHS mandate on contraception and abortion-inducing drugs.
