Sterling Huston, Close Associate of Billy Graham, Passes Away

Sterling HoustonDr. Sterling Huston, a former Director of North American Crusades for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and one of Billy Graham’s closest associates, died on June 29 after a battle with cancer.  He was 76.

“Sterling was one of my closest associates, and his vision, his unique gifts and his strong commitment to evangelism were indispensible to my Crusade ministry,” noted the Rev. Billy Graham in an announcement released by BGEA.

According to Graham, Huston organized and directed dozens of city-wide BGEA crusades.   He also oversaw the development of BGEA’s Christian Life and Witness program, which has helped thousands strengthen their relationship with Christ and share their faith with others.  In addition, Huston served on numerous boards and committees, including Evangelism Explosion, Mission America, and Operation Starting Line.

“For many decades, he was a key leader and laborer in Christian evangelism around the world, particularly as a senior member of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA),” recalled Bob Shuster at the Billy Graham Center Archives in Wheaton, IL.

“We rejoice as he enters into his reward, even as we sadly miss his gentleness, graciousness and wisdom.”

In memory of Huston, the Billy Graham Center Archives at Wheaton College has put up a memorial page consisting of a few items that testify to his importance to the history of evangelism over the last half century and how his gifts were used to serve the Church worldwide.

A memorial service is also being planned for Saturday, July 21, at Browncroft Community Church in Rochester, NY.  The service will begin at 1:30 p.m.

In recalling Huston, NRB President and CEO Dr. Frank Wright exclaimed, “What a great man of God he was!  And now Sterling is with Him who loves him best!”

According to BGEA, Huston is survived by his wife of 47 years, Esther, and their two children, Todd and Alissa, and their families.
