NRB Family Lifts Pastor Rick Warren in Prayer

Prayers and words of encouragement were offered from far and wide for Pastor Rick Warren and his family following the tragic loss of his son.

Last Friday, Pastor Warren's 27-year-old son Matthew took his own life after a lifelong struggle with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and suicidal thoughts.

"Today, we need your prayer for us," Pastor Warren stated in an announcement.

In response, NRB members joined with the wider chorus of well-wishers, whose outpouring of love has "deeply touched" the pastor and his wife, Kay.

In a personal letter to Pastor Warren, NRB President & CEO Dr. Frank Wright offered his "sincerest sympathies."

"I cannot begin to imagine the loss you are experiencing now," Dr. Wright told Pastor Warren, who recently launched a radio program and joined NRB as a member.

"I will be praying that the Lord would bring you and your family comfort and peace during this most difficult time," he added.

From the hundreds of organizations that make up NRB, the following is a selection of comments that were posted to the Web:

Franklin Graham (Billy Graham Evangelistic Association)
Hearts are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Rick Warren's youngest son Matthew who died on April 6. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rick and Kay at this time of deep sorrow and anguish. We have assurance from the Lord Jesus Christ the all sufficient Comforter that God through His power will strengthen them (2 Corinthians 12:9).  The Bible promises that "in times of despair and affliction, God comforts His own" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Over the past week, Pastor Warren's Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA, has highlighted two ways for people to express their prayers, love, and support:

1. They can write the Warren family an encouraging note on Rick Warren's Facebook page.
2. They can contribute to a fund established under Matthew Warren's name to help fight mental illness. Such gifts can be sent to: The Matthew Warren Fund at Saddleback Church, 1 Saddleback Parkway, Lake Forest, CA 92630.
