Earlier this month, Moveiguide® hosted a star-studded Gala in Hollywood, celebrating the Twentieth Annual Faith & Values Awards – also known as the “Crystal Teddy Bear Awards.” The evening honored the Ten Best Movies for Families; the Ten Best Movies for Mature Audiences; multiple $100,000 Epiphany Prizes; and the $50,000 Kairos Prizes for Spiritually Uplifting Screenplays, among others. Last Friday night, The Hallmark Movie Channel telecast the Gala in its entirety.
In addition to giving these important awards during the Gala, Movieguide® Founder and Publisher Dr. Ted Baehr presented highlights from the 2012 Report to the Entertainment Industry. As in previous years, this year’s report demonstrated that the most family-friendly films generate far more income than movies laced with violent, immoral, and/or obscene material. In 2011, for example, Movieguide® examined the highest-earning movies released by major studios in Hollywood – including independent studios. Family-friendly movies in America and Canada averaged $40.7 million, whereas films containing objectionable content averaged only $19.8 million. When they compared the G-rated films to R-rated films released in 2011, the numbers were even starker. Movieguide® found that G-rated movies averaged $58.8 million, but the R-rated movies averaged only $15.3 million.
“The evidence is abundantly clear,” said Dr. Baehr. “Moviegoers greatly prefer family-friendly movies. Most people want to see Good conquer evil, Truth triumph over falsehood, Justice prevail over injustice, Liberty conquer tyranny, and Beauty overcome ugliness.”
Dean Cain hosted the 2012 Faith & Values Awards, which also featured appearances by Jim Carrey, Robert Duvall, Pat Boone, Grammy nominee Natalie Grant, Antonio Banderas, Angela Lansbury, former Miss America Teresa Scanlan, Billy Bob Thornton, Selma Hayek, and the Muppets – among many others.
