Majority of Senators Support ENDA

As the nation awaits the potentially monumental Supreme Court rulings on marriage next week, another priority of the LGBT community achieved a significant milestone. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (S.815), commonly known as ENDA, is now supported by a majority of current U.S. Senators.

This month Senators Angus King (I-ME), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Tom Carper (D-DE), Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) signed on in support, bringing the bill’s cosponsorship to 52 Senators. Only four Democrat Senators have not yet cosponsored the bill: Senators Tim Johnson (D-SD), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Mark Pryor (D-AR).

NRB has repeatedly insisted that ENDA would harm the constitutional rights of faith-based organizations and lead to a “chilling effect” in religious communities. Earlier this spring, NRB Senior Vice President & General Counsel Craig Parshall declared, “The current version of ENDA contains the same convoluted, so-called religious exemption language, as in prior years, and that language is an open invitation for endless litigation and paltry protection for religious employers.”
