Internet Governance Bill Advances

Concerned by international Internet governance proposals after last December’s World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai, Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) led the House Communications and Technology Subcommittee in reporting out a bill that would codify, “It is the policy of the United States to promote a global Internet free from government control and to preserve and advance the successful multistakeholder model that governs the Internet.” However, the advancement of the bill may depend on further conversations between Republican and Democrat committee leaders, as Democrats expressed significant concern that the bill could have unintended consequences for international negotiations about the Internet, for prosecution of online crimes, and for the FCC’s controversial net neutrality rules.
