FCC Process Reform Bill Advances

After coming to a bipartisan agreement, the House Energy and Commerce Committee this week advanced legislation to improve FCC operations. Communications Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) has been dedicated to improving transparency and predictability at the Commission, and The FCC Process Reform Act (H.R. 3675) is intended to advance that goal by encouraging increased sunshine and enhanced timelines for FCC action.

One noteworthy provision calls for the FCC to conduct a formal public inquiry about whether or not procedures should be established that would allow a bipartisan majority of Commissioners to place an item on the FCC’s Open Meeting agenda. Currently, the Chairman sets that agenda.

“The agreement reached by Chairman Walden and Ranking Member [Anna] Eshoo is the culmination of months of work by members and staff to find common ground for an approach that will make the FCC a stronger, more accountable agency,” stated Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI).
