Epic TV Miniseries The Bible Now Out on DVD, Blu-Ray

The Bible DVD CoverThe ten-hour television miniseries that made history for the History Channel last month continued its unprecedented success this month with its home video release.

In its first week of release, The Bible quickly became the biggest selling TV on DVD in the last five years and the biggest miniseries of all time on Blu-ray, Digital HD, and DVD. According to the Association for Christian Retail (CBA), The Bible is the fastest pre-selling faith-based title in its 60-year history. The miniseries also ranked No. 1 across digital stores including iTunes, Amazon, VUDU, Xbox, PlayStation, CinemaNow, and GooglePlay.

“We are humbled by the overwhelming response from audiences to The Bible miniseries,” said the co-executive producers of The Bible, husband-and-wife team Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. “First, the show was No. 1 on History, now it is No. 1 on Blu-ray and DVD, and has been No. 1 in every country in which it aired.”

More than a documentary, The Bible features powerful performances, dramatic live action, cutting-edge CGI technology, and dazzling visual effects. Filmed on site in the Middle East and Morocco, The Bible breathes spectacular life into the dramatic tales of faith and courage from Genesis through Revelation. Included are the stories of Noah, Moses, David, Daniel, and, of course, Jesus, among others.

"Mark Burnett and Roma Downey's mini-series The Bible is an unqualified success," commented NRB President & CEO Dr. Frank Wright. “It rises above its forebears, shining with cinematic artistry, dramatic creativity, and essential biblical fidelity.”

During its run last month, The Bible propelled the History Channel to No. 1 in all of television from 8:00-10:00 p.m. on Sunday nights with 95 million cumulative viewers watching the miniseries.

After being named the official app of The Bible series, YouVersion’s Bible app had its biggest month ever, reaching 88 million total installs, breaking into the top 15 of all free apps in the iTunes App Store, and seeing 3.4 billion minutes of Bible engagement in the app.

“We feel incredibly blessed that we were able to bring this amazing love story to life on the screen,” noted Downey and Burnett. “It is our hope that folks everywhere will continue to be touched by the message of the Bible and cherish these stories at home with their families for years to come. This is just the beginning.”

The four-disc set comes with hours of behind-the-scenes footage and special features, including a discussion by Downey and Burnett on the difficulties of filming and casting for the miniseries; a look at the recording session for the soundtrack with composer Hans Zimmer and soloist Lisa Gerrard; a montage of the production's visual effects; and a piece called "Believing in Miracles," in which the cast and crew relive what they saw as miraculous moments that happened while filming in Morocco.
