NRB’s Voice Heard in FCC’s TV Order

WASHINGTON (NRB) – National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) applauds the proposed decision of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to modernize and simplify current regulations regarding children’s television programming. The FCC released its draft order last week, and has the issue slated for a vote at its meeting next month.

NRB’s formal comments in the proceedings, arguing for regulatory reform to lessen the burden on local TV broadcasters, were cited in the commission’s draft report and order. “Any broadcast deregulation that recognizes the reality of today’s media market is welcome,” says attorney and NRB member Joseph Chautin III of Hardy, Carey, Chautin & Balkin. “These changes to the children’s television requirements were long overdue.” Chautin authored NRB’s comments that were filed with the FCC.

Among other changes, the commission proposes to reduce record-keeping obligations of stations in both the nature of content required regarding children’s programming as well as changing filing deadlines from a quarterly basis to an annual one. NRB had argued that current paperwork rules that often require repetitive information can unnecessarily overwhelm stations and fail to help parents to make informed choices about the programs their children watch.
