Manassas, VA– NRB today issued a statement of support for the First Amendment Defense Act, a bill sponsored by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-ID) to defend religious freedom.
“I applaud Sen. Lee and Rep. Labrador for leading this charge in Congress,” stated Dr. Jerry A. Johnson, President & CEO of NRB. “Whatever the Supreme Court rules on marriage in the days to come, there should be no controversy over an effort to prevent a heavy-handed government agent from targeting or coercing citizens whose religious belief is that marriage is the holy union of one man and one woman.”
The First Amendment Defense Act (S. 1598, H.R. 2802) would bar the federal government from threatening the tax treatment, grant, contract, license, or certification of individuals or organizations that uphold their religious conviction that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. This legislation was introduced with 18 co-sponsors in the Senate and 57 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives.
During oral arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges before the Supreme Court, when asked if a ruling imposing “gay marriage” nationwide could lead to a college potentially losing its tax-exempt status for adhering to its convictions on marriage, U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli stated, “…it's certainly going to be an issue…. I don't deny that, Justice Alito. It is – it is going to be an issue.”
Dr. Johnson continued, “Sadly, there is no question that this legislation is needed. General Verrilli made clear that the Obama Administration would be open to targeting religious organizations if they dare stay true to the tenets of their faith on marriage.”
