This Law Renders the Faithful Defenseless

WASHINGTON (NRB) – A bill called the Do No Harm Act, winding its way through Congress, could deal a major blow to religious liberty, according National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), the preeminent association of Christian radio and television broadcasters, webcasters, bloggers, and communicators. The legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives (H.R. 1450) and in the Senate (S. 593).

“If passed, this law would strip away the potent protections of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) whenever a host of federal regulations collide with the consciences of the faithful,” said Craig Parshall, general counsel for NRB. “Christian communicators will be at risk of violating the law if their message inflicts what the Act vaguely calls ‘dignitary harm,’ leaving them defenseless. RFRA has been a tried and true shield of protection for people of faith. The ‘Do No Harm’ bill is outrageously named – for it will handcuff RFRA and inflict incalculable harm to people of faith.”

In the 2014 case Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., the United States Supreme Court affirmed that RFRA provided legal protection for a national chain of Christian-owned retail stores that resisted complying with the part of the Affordable Care Act that mandated insurance coverage for abortion-inducing drugs.
