Signs of Christmas are shining in Washington, particularly in the brightness of the capital’s national Christmas trees.
Earlier this month, as he officiated the annual lighting of the Capitol Christmas Tree, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) stated,
You look up at this awe-inspiring Dome and you look up at the night sky, you get overwhelmed. Perhaps just as those humble shepherds were when the angel appeared before them. Out in the middle of nowhere, they must have wondered what on Earth was going on. “Fear not,” the angel said, “For behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy… For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” Off the shepherds went, finding the manger and kneeling before the embodiment of God’s light and love for each of us…. we come to recognize it’s not so much about the telling of the story as it is the serving of the story. And what emerges is a spirit of giving and a message of hope for all seasons: “Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men.”
A few days later, as he oversaw the festivities on the White House lawn with the lighting of the National Christmas Tree, President Obama declared,
Each Christmas, we celebrate the birth of a child who came into the world with only a stable’s roof to shelter Him. But through a life of humility and the ultimate sacrifice, a life guided by faith and kindness towards others, Christ assumed a mighty voice, teaching us lessons of compassion and charity that have lasted more than two millennia. He ministered to the poor. He embraced the outcast. He healed the sick. And in Him we see a living example of scripture that we ought to love others not only through our words, but also through our deeds…. In this season of hope, let us come together as one people, one family to ensure that we're doing everything we can to keep America the land of endless opportunity and boundless optimism for which we're so thankful.
