Nashville, TN — There is a dangerous collision of worldviews, yet Christians are slumbering, Southern Baptist Convention President Dr. Ronnie Floyd told attendees at a worship service hosted last Wednesday by the National Religious Broadcasters.
Believers, Floyd insisted, must come together in prayerful unity to seek God for the “next Great Awakening in America” and to seek fulfillment of the Great Commission across the globe.
The senior pastor of Cross Church in Northwest Arkansas cited sharp differences of belief in the culture on critical matters, such as the sanctity of human life, God’s design for marriage, and religious liberty.
“We must get the Gospel to the ends of the earth,” he said, in order to confront the “lostness of this world.”
Floyd, who was elected SBC President in 2014, lamented that “there is a stench of indifference and lukewarm spirituality” in the Church.
“There is an obsession with a narcissistic consumption of cultural Christianity in America,” he continued, suggesting it reflects the “passivity” of church members.
Looking to Romans 13:11, Floyd asked those gathered last week at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, “Where is the urgency?”
The Apostle Paul writes the Lord’s coming is nearer than first believed, Floyd said, calling on Christians to “wake up from your spiritual slothfulness, wake up from your spiritual sleep.”
“God is saying to the Church that you cannot be unresponsive in a generation and in a moment in history that undeniably needs to hear the Church stand up like never before,” he said. “We need all hands on deck to proclaim the Bible is the Word of God and Jesus Christ is Lord.”
Floyd said the hope of the Gospel is more than able to respond to the cultural battles.
“The time is now for the Church around the world to rise up and stand together with hope,” he said, adding, “We have to stay in the battle. God wants to use us for His glory like never before.”
This is a distinct moment in history, Floyd continued, insisting that believers must come together in “clear agreement and a visible union” to engage in “extraordinary prayer for the next Great Awakening in America.”
“If the evangelicals of America cannot unite that the greatest need in America is a spiritual awakening and to reach the world for Christ, what in the world can we unite on?” the Southern Baptist leader asked.
“We can’t fix ourselves; we have a Genesis 3 problem. We are fallen,” he continued.
“If you look at it biblically and historically, there is no great movement of God that does not begin without the extraordinary prayer of God’s people,” Floyd noted.
“God can do more in a moment than you can do in a lifetime,” he said. “For far too long the world has seen what we can do; it’s time for the world to see what God can do.”
The Evangelical Church must recapture the vision to reach the world for Jesus Christ and go forward with a “deep sense of urgency,” Floyd said, explaining the New Testament Church had an urgency the contemporary Church lacks.
He said he fears a “deep theological problem” is hindering the Church: “They don’t believe people are lost anymore.”
“It’s not about what man says. It’s not about what a church says. It’s about what God’s Word says,” Floyd insisted.
Perhaps, he suggested, it is an eschatological problem. “We’re not sure Jesus is going to come back.”
He said at the root is “lame evangelism.”
“We have a spiritual problem. We need to humble ourselves before God,” Floyd said, noting the sense of urgency will only return when Christians repent of their apathy and passivity.
“We forget about the moment Christ changed our life,” he said. “We need to go back and recapture our first love.”
In November, Floyd released on his website, RonnieFloyd.com, a free e-book on revival. The publication, which he encouraged NRB15 attendees to download, is titled Pleading with Southern Baptists to Humbly Come Together before God in Clear Agreement, Visible Union, and in Extraordinary Prayer for the Next Great Awakening and for the World to Be Reached for Christ. Additional tools and resources to promote the call to prayer are available on pray4awakening.com.
Floyd’s latest book, Forward: 7 Distinguishing Marks for Future Leaders, will be released by B&H Publishing this summer.
