Dr. Rick Warren, founding pastor of Saddleback Church in California and author of The Purpose Driven Life, this week testified before the Senate Appropriations State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee on the subject of global health programs sponsored by the U.S. Government. Dr. Warren stated, “It’s far more cost effective, far cheaper, for Americans to send medicine to make friends now, than to send troops to fight enemies later. Medicines cost less than tanks.” He also reminded the Senators on the panel of the importance of the government working with faith groups in reaching and distributing aid to people in need. “The Church invented the hospital,” he said. He also asserted, “I’ve actually found it quite easy to work with other governments. They’re not nearly as afraid of the church as the American government is.” Notably, prior to beginning his global health testimony, Pastor Warren made sure to thank Subcommittee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) for hosting a hearing on international religious freedom earlier this year.
Daily Hope with Rick Warren, launched in 2013, is an NRB member.
