Mark Jenkins, president of Words of Victory and a member of the NRB President’s Council, participated in Israel’s official Holocaust remembrance ceremony on April 11 and laid a wreath on behalf of NRB at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Center in Jerusalem's Warsaw Ghetto Square on the Mount of Remembrance.
“We lay this wreath on behalf of Dr. Jerry Johnson and the leadership of the NRB in memory of those who perished in the Shoah and in recognition of those who survived to establish the modern state of Israel,” said Jenkins, who was accompanied by his wife, Terrie. “We honor them for their courage, creativity, and resourcefulness in building a nation which has blessed the world.”
Every year, a special day of commemoration is observed when the nation of Israel stops to honor the martyrs and the heroes of the Holocaust. The special day of commemoration is known on the Jewish calendar as "Yom HaShoah" and is marked with a solemn ceremony at Israel’s official Holocaust Memorial and Education Center, Yad Vashem.
During the ceremony, torches are lit one for each of the millions of Jews killed in what the Jews call the “Shoah,” or the Holocaust. Special songs and poetic readings are presented by Israel’s leading citizens, and compelling stories of survival are shared by those who lived through this horrific period of history. The ceremony also features a laying of wreaths by Israeli leadership and by representatives of many nations.
In addition to the victims of the Holocaust, Yom HaShoah is a day that also recognizes the heroes – the righteous among the nations who risked their lives to save the Jews – and the role holocaust survivors played in the founding of the Jewish State.
Yom HaShoah is observed a week before the nation’s memorial and Independence Day, which was observed from the evening of April 18 until the evening of April 19.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the modern state of Israel. During Proclaim 18, NRB’s most recent Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, the association held a Special Israel Session in recognition of the anniversary. Attendees heard from Holocaust survivor Luna Fuss-Kaufman, pastor David Jeremiah, Bible teacher Kay Arthur, and radio talk show host Dennis Prager.
Also, each year, NRBTV broadcasts an international presentation of the official state ceremony for the holocaust in partnership with Christian Friends of Yad Vashem and Words of Victory’s Israel initiative.
The program, titled “A Nation Remembers,” will re-air later this fall. A companion website, www.anationrembers.org, supports the broadcast with additional content.
