Shortly after President Donald J. Trump announced his intention to nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court, NRB’s president & CEO called for “direct engagement at this pivotal time” from the association’s members.
“As I said in my statement, filling this vacancy may be a generational opportunity to secure a strong majority on the Supreme Court committed to the Constitution, especially our First Amendment liberties,” said Dr. Jerry A. Johnson in an email to NRB's membership, referring to his statement to the press regarding the nomination of Kavanaugh.
Johnson noted that several victories for religious freedom and freedom of speech were determined in the last few weeks by a 5-4 vote, demonstrating just how critical it is that the Senate confirm Kavanaugh.
“This seat also may be the deciding vote in overturning the horrendous Roe v. Wade decision that imposed abortion on demand in America, as well as many other critical matters,” Johnson said.
In light of the importance of the seat, Johnson urged NRB members to do the following:
1. Pray. “Scripture repeatedly teaches us that we are obligated to pray for governing authorities,” Johnson noted. “Please pray for the Senate as it considers this nomination, and pray for God to strengthen Judge Kavanaugh in the midst of the confirmation process, which is likely to be very difficult.”
2. Personally engage their two Senators, urging support for the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh. “Write letters, send emails, and call their offices to make your voice heard,” Johnson said.
3. Use their platforms — broadcasting, print, digital, social, etc. — to urge their audiences to become engaged in this confirmation battle. “The involvement of your audiences could make the difference in the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh,” Johnson stated.
In his statement to the press, Johnson said Kavanaugh “is eminently qualified to serve on the high court, and National Religious Broadcasters enthusiastically urges his swift confirmation by the U.S. Senate.”
He highlighted Kavanaugh’s “outstanding credentials and a track record that reveals a judicial philosophy honoring the U.S. Constitution, including fundamental freedoms of speech and religion.”
“Judge Kavanaugh should sail through the Senate on the basis of merit,” Johnson said before urging leading Democrats to “stand above the fray and the uncivilized tactics of the radical Left.”
“We must have Supreme Court justices who honor the values of life and liberty at the very core of our Republic, and the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh is a generational opportunity to ensure a strong majority of justices who will stay true to the Constitution and be respectful of the proper role of the judiciary as the interpreter, rather than maker, of the law,” Johnson concluded.
“I urge Christians to pray fervently and to work tirelessly for the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh.”
