As pro-Israel Christian leaders gathered this week in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the modern state of Israel and the U.S. Embassy’s move to Jerusalem, NRB president & CEO Dr. Jerry A. Johnson urged those in Christian media to get out the right message on Israel as mainstream media becomes increasingly anti-Israel.
“If we’re going to get this message out, I want to start with the most important thing,” said Johnson, “and that is to have the right message.”
During a session Monday at the Israel: Seventy & Strong summit, Johnson noted that there are people pushing out a false message, such as the belief that the Jews are no longer God’s chosen people, and God does not have specific future plans for the nation of Israel.
In response, Johnson cited several passages from the book of Genesis that focused on God’s promise to Abraham, Jacob, and the people of Israel, including Genesis 17:8, in which God says, “I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession.”
“Why this is important is that before there was a temple, before there was a tabernacle, before there was circumcision, before there was a people or a nation, before there was a name, there was the land,” Johnson stated.
“This isn’t part of the law. This is all pre-law,” he said, noting that there are some who say the New Testament erases this.
“It does not erase this,” Johnson continued. “All of this is pre-law. God gave the land. And we need to amplify this message, teach this message, preach this message. The land is important to God.”
And one way to amplify the message, Johnson said, is to make a statement, such as the recent resolution approved by NRB’s Board of Directors, a body of approximately 100 key leaders among Christian communicators.
The resolution on “Celebrating and Supporting Israel,” adopted on February 27, 2018, praises the Trump administration’s affirmation of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and plans to relocate the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, notes Christians’ duty to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem,” celebrates the 70th anniversary of the modern state of Israel, and calls on the U.S. “to stand steadfastly by Israel, even as others malign, abandon, or attack her.”
“This is the kind of message we need to craft,” Johnson shared.
“I challenge you, whatever your platform, take those verses, take that theology, do a resolution, do an interview, do a sermon, tweet, post something on Facebook, put out a YouTube [video]. Let’s do it. Let the word go forth,” he concluded.
Other speakers at the May 13-15 summit, hosted by American Christian Leaders for Israel, included Reuven Azar, deputy chief of Mission Embassy of Israel; Gordon Robertson, CEO of Christian Broadcasting Network; Dr. Jim Showers, president of Friends of Israel; Daniel Williams, executive director of Israel Allies Foundation; Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council; Gary Bauer, director of CUFI Action Fund; and Star Parker, president of Urban CURE.
The summit – for which NRB was a Platinum Sponsor – celebrated the past, evaluated the present, and created strategies for future generations of Christians to stand alongside Israel in her next 70 years.
It culminated with a Jerusalem Day celebration in partnership with the Israel Allies Caucus on Tuesday, May 15.
