In 1952, Luis Palau was 18 years old and working at a bank in Argentina supporting his widowed mother and five sisters.
It was that year that Palau and two of his friends asked a local radio station owner if they could create a seven-minute daily radio program in which they would discuss current affairs and have a brief Bible devotional at the end of the broadcast.
When the owner asked the boys how much they could afford to pay for the show, they said nothing, so the station owner found a sponsor and put the boys on the air – effectively launching Palau’s radio ministry.
Each day during his lunch break, Palau would run across the street to the radio station, record the show, and then race back to work. The program ran from 1952 until 1960, when Palau moved to the United States.
Once in America, Palau relaunched the program as Luis Palau Responde (Luis Palau Responds). The program is still on the air across the Spanish-speaking world.
In the 1960s, Palau launched a second longer-format Bible teaching program called Cruzada that also is still on the air. In addition, he has a daily two-minute English program called Reaching Your World. Collectively, these three radio programs can be heard daily on more than 5,000 radio stations in 48 countries.
“I’ve always thought of radio as the intimate media, a personal, one-on-one connection,” Palau told NRB Today in a statement.
“For the past 65 years, I have been blessed to make those one-on-one connections with people every day,” he continued. “I appreciate the power of radio ministry in communicating the Good News of Jesus Christ and those faithful individuals who have kept radio ministry going strong.”
In addition to Palau’s radio outreach, his evangelistic festivals have produced some of the largest audiences ever recorded in cities from south Florida to South America. His ministry also includes an alliance of evangelists called Next Generation Alliance (NGA) that allow partner evangelists to collaborate, draw guidance and resources from Palau’s vast experience, and become equipped to reach the world for Christ. More than 650 evangelists are currently involved in NGA.
Together, Palau and his ministry, the Luis Palau Association, have shared the Good News of Jesus Christ with tens of millions of people through evangelistic events and media over the past 50 years. He has spoken in 75 countries with more than one million registered decisions for Jesus Christ. He has authored close to 50 books, contributed articles on issues of faith to countless publications, and counseled business leaders, political leaders, and heads of state around the world.
Palau’s ministry has been a member of NRB since 1979.
