Luis Palau Receives Prestigious Esperanza Spirit Award at National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast

Luis PalauEvangelist Luis Palau was honored with the prestigious 2018 Esperanza Spirit Award at the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast last week in Washington, D.C.

Palau received a standing ovation from the nearly 600 Latino leaders who had gathered for the June 14 breakfast that featured guest speakers including Vice President Mike Pence, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Tim Scott, and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson.

“For nearly 60 years, one of God's faithful servants has traveled the globe, bringing the life-saving message of the Gospel to millions of souls through evangelism events and media,” said Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Conde-Frazier, who presented the award. “His legacy of faithfulness has made an impact on the kingdom of God that is far beyond measure.”

As part of the award ceremony, attendees saw a sneak preview of Palau the Movie, an upcoming film on Palau’s life. The highly anticipated film is set to be released in the United States, Latin America, and Spain in October. Shot in Argentina, the movie will recount Palau’s early years as he lost his father, committed his life to Christ, and began his worldwide ministry.

“It’s quite surreal watching someone take on your persona and story,” Palau said recently about the film, the first preview for which was shown at Proclaim 18 in Nashville. “Although we weren’t pursuing this project – it was the farthest thing from my mind, actually – we feel honored by the friends who came up with this project and have done the hard work to produce it. I pray that it will honor the Lord and clearly share the Good News.”

Over the past six decades, Palau and his ministry have shared the Good News of Jesus Christ with tens of millions of people through evangelistic events and media. His ministry also includes a global network of hundreds of evangelists focused on collaboration, fellowship, training, and resourcing. Palau also recently launched a new endeavor known as City Gospel Movements with a vision to celebrate and accelerate the work of the Church around the world by inspiring leaders to keep evangelism as a central focus in their outreach efforts and coaching them in proven models for city transformation.

Diagnosed in January with stage IV lung cancer, Palau was unable to attend the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast. Kevin Palau, his son and the president of the Luis Palau Association, accepted the award on his behalf.

Earlier this year, one of Palau’s other sons, Andrew, accepted on his behalf NRB’s Hall of Fame Award – an honor that goes to a NRB member who has made an invaluable contribution to the field of Christian communications, has demonstrated the highest standards, and has exhibited faithfulness in Jesus.

“Luis Palau is a model Christian evangelist and Gospel broadcaster who has had a monumental impact on the world for Christ,” NRB’s president & CEO, Dr. Jerry A. Johnson, said in announcing Palau's Hall of Fame Award.

“NRB loves Luis Palau and we pray fervently that the Lord will grant him healing, even while we praise God for how He continues to use Luis through this illness to advance the Gospel,” he added.

In a video shown at his induction to the Hall of Fame, Palau thanked NRB and told the audience, “Frankly, there are many other people who deserve [the award] just as much as me. We just stuck around for many decades. But the glory I want to give to Jesus Christ, to God the Father, and to the blessed Holy Spirit. I am an unworthy servant of the Savior. And it’s all about the cross, all about the cross. If it wasn’t for the cross, we would all be condemned forever.”
