The American Family Association (AFA) is celebrating 40 years of ministry this month as one of the largest and most effective pro-family organizations in the nation.
Rev. Dr. Donald E. Wildmon, who was the pastor of First United Methodist Church in Southaven, Mississippi, founded AFA in 1977 as the National Federation for Decency. The name of the nonprofit organization changed to American Family Association in 1988.
“My father, Don Wildmon, started the American Family Association in 1977 to be a significant presence on the frontlines of America’s culture war,” said AFA President Tim Wildmon in a press release. “Four decades ago, he had no idea how far God would lead this ministry, but everyone could clearly see that my father was called toward restoring Christian values in our culture. Today, we are blessed that so many have been impacted by his vision and our ongoing work.”
The impact of AFA on pro-family issues is recognized nationwide. AFA spokespersons have appeared on programs including ABC's Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and Nightline; Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, Hannity & Colmes, and Fox News Live; NBC's Today Show and Meet the Press; MSNBC's Deborah Norville Tonight and Countdown with Keith Olbermann; CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight, Anderson Cooper 360, Wolf Blitzer Reports, Talk Back Live, American Morning, and Crossfire; and CBN's The 700 Club; among others.
AFA spokespersons have been quoted in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Washington Times, Chicago Tribune, Mediaweek, Advertising Age, TIME, Newsweek, WORLD, Christianity Today, and numerous other media outlets. They also are frequent guests on national and international radio programs including the BBC, National Public Radio (NPR), and Voice of America.
In a new national survey conducted by George Barna’s American Culture & Faith Institute, AFA was ranked No. 4 among organizations that Christian conservatives said made the most positive impact on American society during 2016.
Through its Action Alerts, AFA brings many pressing issues to Americans’ attention, including the plight of Christian business owners fighting against progressive agendad, the defunding of Planned Parenthood, the appointment of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, the protection of children’s privacy in Texas, physician-assisted suicide in Washington, D.C., and many more. These alerts are distributed to more than a million AFA friends and supporters, who take action in tangible ways.
In the past year, AFA made headlines for its highly successful #BoycottTarget initiative, which has garnered more than 1.5 million signatures from those in opposition to the retailer’s controversial restroom and fitting room policy.
And earlier this year, AFA’s Founder received the 2017 NRB Hall of Fame Award at Proclaim 17, the NRB International Christian Media Convention in Orlando, Florida. In congratulating Wildmon, NRB President & CEO Dr. Jerry A. Johnson said, “I am thankful for the tireless efforts of Don Wildmon and American Family Association. It can, at times, be difficult to stand up for what is right, but Don and AFA have done so these past four decades as part of their commitment to protect families across the nation – thereby protecting the very building block of our society. Their impact has been broadly felt.”
AFA has been a member of NRB since 1984. The organization’s mission is to inform, equip, and activate individuals to strengthen the moral foundations of American culture, and give aid to the church here and abroad in its task of fulfilling the Great Commission.
