NRB leaders and staff members were among the thousands who attended the Values Voter Summit this past weekend in Washington, DC.
Moreover, NRB played a very active role at the gathering of social conservatives, having been a sponsor of the summit’s Radio Row, a co-sponsor for the entire event, and an exhibitor. In addition, NRB President & CEO Dr. Jerry A. Johnson was a panelist for a general session on “Marriage in America” and host of a breakout session on the blatant censorship occurring in Canada and the culture that threatens to bring such censorship to the U.S.
When asked what role the media has played in the campaign to redefine marriage, Dr. Johnson spoke of how the mainstream media has adopted the politically correct language when referring to sexual orientations.
“The mainstream media keeps repeating this, writing it into scripts, repeating the lingo, and it is affecting us,” Dr. Johnson noted. “Be very careful how you talk about these issues, because part of the debate is in the language itself.”
As for what’s taking place in Canada, Dr. Charles McVety, President of Canada Christian College, gave an eye-opening presentation about the censorship of Christian content there. For example, religious broadcasters in Canada must turn in their sermons on Wednesday for editing and make corrections by Friday.
“And on Friday, if they haven’t changed it, they run last week’s sermons,” Dr. Johnson reported. “This is right next door, and we don’t have to live under some kind of self-imposed Sharia law on this issue. We have the First Amendment freedom to speak and to exercise and we should use it.”
Other highlights from the September 26-28 summit included the presence of Meriam Ibrahim, who was honored with the inaugural Cost of Discipleship Award for her willingness to face death in Sudan rather than renounce her faith in Jesus Christ.
Naghmeh Abedini, wife of imprisoned American pastor Saeed Abedini, was also present and spoke of the efforts over the past two years in trying to secure her husband’s release from a prison in Iran.
Prominent speakers at Values Voter Summit 2014 included, among others, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN); Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), Gov. Mike Huckabee, Host, Huckabee; as well as Kelly Shackelford, President & CEO, Liberty Institute; Gary Bauer, President, American Values; Alan Robertson, Duck Dynasty; Jason and David Benham, Founders, Benham Companies; and Todd Starnes, Host, FOX News & Commentary.
Since 2006, the Values Voter Summit has provided a forum to help inform and mobilize citizens across America to preserve the bedrock values of traditional marriage, religious liberty, sanctity of life, and limited government that make our nation strong. Each year, it showcases prominent policymakers and leading conservative voices. The event has drawn as many as 3,000-plus attendees from around the nation and foreign countries.
