NRB President & CEO Dr. Jerry A. Johnson received dozens of interview requests last month as the opening of Darren Aronofsky’s Noah movie drew near.
Dr. Johnson, who screened the movie in advance together with NRB Board Member Phil Cooke, has been interviewed by The Associated Press, The Christian Post, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, and World News, among other media outlets. He’s also appeared on MSNBC’s NewsNation and been quoted in publications including USA Today.
Dr. Johnson played a critical role in Paramount Pictures’ decision to add an explanatory message to the marketing of Noah.
During the NRB 2014 International Christian Media Convention in Nashville, TN, Dr. Johnson made a public appeal to Paramount to add a statement to help audiences better understand that the feature film is a dramatization of the major scriptural themes and not a line-by-line retelling of the Bible story.
Paramount, in response, “fully embraced” the idea and decided to add the following to future marketing materials:
"The film is inspired by the story of Noah.
While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide.
The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis."
Since then, Dr. Johnson has provided insightful reviews, comments, and critiques of the film, which are captured and organized in three articles he’s written for Ed Stetzer’s The Exchange blog in Christianity Today.
Dr. Johnson’s background includes time spent teaching a Cinematic Theology course at the undergraduate level in college, as well as a course on the Theology of Movies and Visual Media at the graduate level in seminary.
