Independence Day is a time of great celebration around the nation, and Washington, D.C., is no exception. While much attention will be turned that day to festivities and fireworks on the National Mall, another event of interest will be taking place nearby down the Potomac River. At Mount Vernon, the residence of President George Washington and the first First Lady, Martha Washington, a party will be going on with flair from the early days of the Republic.
Visitors to the historic site will experience military reenactments, a wreath-laying ceremony, and day-time smoke fireworks in patriotic colors over the river. A special naturalization ceremony for 100 new citizens, as well as birthday cake and Revolutionary-era ice cream, will also be part of the day.
