Earlier this autumn, Twitter sought to squash the promotion of an ad by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) in which she noted she “fought Planned Parenthood, and we stopped the sale of baby body parts, thank God.” While it later reversed course under public pressure, Twitter initially stated the claim was “an inflammatory statement that is likely to evoke a strong negative reaction.” At the time, reporting in a number of media outlets might have led one to believe that this was an old issue on which the books had been closed. However, recent events have affirmed that it is very much alive.
Blackburn was referring to the work of a select investigative panel she chaired that was convened after horrific undercover videos released by the Center for Medical Progress in 2015 showed key Planned Parenthood officials describing the dismemberment of aborted babies and apparently negotiating the sale of their body parts. The House Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives issued a 471-page report detailing its findings and recommendations regarding the abortion industry and the selling of tissue from aborted babies.
The Senate Judiciary Committee also conducted its own review of the actions of several Planned Parenthood and tissue procurement actors, and last year proceeded to make extensively documented criminal referrals to the FBI. The FBI indicated in June that it was reviewing those referrals.
In more recent news, the U.S. Department of Justice signaled last week that an investigation is indeed under way when it formally requested that the Senate Judiciary Committee provide unredacted copies of records from its report. Moreover, this week the District Attorney for Orange County, California, announced that an investigation by his office resulted in two fetal tissue procurement companies admitting liability “for their role in the unlawful sale of fetal tissue and stem cells for profit.” The companies also must pay $7.8 million and end their business operations in California.
“I’m pleased serious investigations have been underway after Planned Parenthood officials were caught on camera callously discussing the dismembering of prenatal babies,” said Dr. Jerry A. Johnson, President & CEO of NRB. “The horrific, evil practices of this abortion behemoth are undeniable, and there is no reason it should be subsidized by the government. I urge Congress to act immediately to discontinue the flow of taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood.”
