House Advances Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood

The House of Representatives this week successfully advanced a bill that would in large part pull government funds away from abortion providers like Planned Parenthood, as well as repeal much of “Obamacare.”  Senate Republicans passed it last month using a complicated legislative procedure known as budget reconciliation, so now the legislation moves to President Obama, who almost certainly will kill it with his veto pen.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) declared that they are fulfilling a promise and creating a path for the future.  “We will not back down from this fight to defend the sanctity of life and make quality health care coverage achievable for all Americans,” he said.  Similarly, as she delivered the first weekly Republican address of the New Year, Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) stated:

The point of health care is to preserve and protect life. That’s why this bill stops taxpayer funding for abortion providers. The people have, for years, asked Congress to stop sending taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood, especially after we learned last year of the disturbing practices Planned Parenthood officials engage in such as harvesting and selling baby body parts. These actions—along with the hundreds of thousands of abortions they perform each year—show a blatant disregard for human life.

Notably, following the release of the horrific videos exposing Planned Parenthood this summer, NRB President & CEO Dr. Jerry A. Johnson sent a letter to the association’s members encouraging them to speak out for the federal de-funding of the abortion giant. “Let’s stand together this weekend and in the days ahead to make sure listeners, viewers, and congregations know that #PPSellsBabyParts and to urge Congress to #DefundPP,” he stated.
