While much attention was on telephone issues at this week’s FCC Open Meeting — with particular focus on robocalls, “cramming,” and rural call completion — the agency also decided to take a new look at wireless microphones in light of the spectrum auction re-packing phase. Responding to petitions, the commission revised and clarified its rules on certain technical matters such as emissions and coordination rules. The commissioners also initiated a new proceeding to allow public input on proposals to permit performing arts and other organizations to obtain licenses to operate wireless microphones at smaller venues if they can demonstrate need and professional ability. More information about this proposed rulemaking is here.
