Late last week the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit shockingly upheld a California law that requires pro-life pregnancy care centers to promote abortion. Now NRB member Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is considering with its client, the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, possible avenues of appeal on the grounds that compelled speech is not free speech.
NRB is pleased that the individual at the helm of ADF, Alan Sears, will address the NRB Board of Directors during its meeting at Proclaim17 next February. With the backdrop of this outrageous California case, as well as other legal battles like challenges to the religious rights of Massachusetts churches in their own buildings and the pending U.S. Supreme Court Trinity Lutheran case on state discrimination against ministries in Missouri, NRB leaders will be treated to an inside view of the legal landscape.
“Alan Sears is a hero of faith and freedom in the United States today,” said NRB President & CEO Dr. Jerry A. Johnson. “He and the ADF team are specialists in battles for liberty that so often are litigated in federal and state courts. I am grateful NRB’s Board will hear from Alan and that all Proclam17 attendees will receive valuable insights from ADF at the convention’s annual Public Policy Session.”
As ADF President, CEO, and General Counsel, Alan Sears has led the organization since its launch in 1994 and has achieved a powerful record of success in defense of freedom. Notably, ADF has been a key player in 49 U.S. Supreme Court victories, including recent wins in Town of Greece v. Galloway on public prayer and Conestoga Wood Specialties v. Burwell, which was joined in the important Hobby Lobby victory for the religious freedom rights of businesses. Indeed, ADF attorneys win more than 75 percent of the cases in which they participate. Sears has also spearheaded the training of 1,924 lawyers from 45 countries as part of ADF’s Legal Academy. Those attorneys have now given back more than $200 million worth of time in pro-bono efforts.
Proclaim 17, NRB’s annual International Christian Media Convention, will take place Feb. 27-March 2, 2017, in Orlando, Florida. In addition to Alan Sears at the NRB Board meeting and other key ADF voices at the Public Policy Session, convention-goers will also have the opportunity to hear from Tony Evans, Shaunti Feldhahn, Nick Hall, Hugh Hewitt, Eric Metaxas, R.C. Sproul, and Lee Strobel, among other featured speakers. Attendees can take advantage of the Early Bird Registration discounts if they sign up by Nov. 1.
