Editor's Note: This year, NRB will be recognizing a record number of organizations with the NRB Milestone Award, which is presented each year at the annual NRB Convention in recognition of pioneers in Christian communications who have demonstrated exemplary service in the industry for five decades or more. One of this year's honorees, Dr. Jose A. Reyes, Sr., officially reaches the 50-year mark today, February 7. In recognition of Dr. Reyes’ milestone, we share with you the story of how he’s communicated the redemption message through radio and television over these past 50 years.
In 1963, while serving as a pastor of a church in the town of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Dr. Reyes felt the need to reach his community with the message of salvation through radio. On February 7, 1963, Dr. Reyes began broadcasting on the secular radio station WIAC, which allowed him to broadcast his church’s services from their location.
Five years later, due to his ability to share the Gospel through the radio waves, the international office of the denomination he was working with asked him to move to Cleveland, TN, to start their international Spanish radio ministry. That ministry eventually expanded its reach throughout Latin America, Spain and Spanish speaking areas in the United States.
In January 2008, the denomination decided to close the communication departments (English and Spanish). That same year, Dr. Reyes established an interdenominational communications ministry and a new church, and continued with his life’s passion – the communication of the Good News of the Kingdom using mass media.
Presently, Dr. Reyes’ radio and television programs, Compartiendo El Pan de Vida (Sharing the Bread of Life), are known throughout the Spanish speaking world and are touching thousands of lives every day. This has been accomplished through more than 1,000 outlets throughout the world. Through the years, the radio and television ministries have also received recognition for their excellence in content and technical quality. The recording studios and offices are located in Kissimmee, FL.
During his 50 years of service in the field of communications, Dr. Reyes was used by God in establishing several organizations that would give support and encouragement to those involved in Christian communications in the Hispanic communities. Among these were the Hispanic National Religious Broadcasters (HNRB) – the Caribbean Hispanic Chapter of NRB – and COICOM (the Association of Christian Communicators for Latin America and Spain).
Dr. Reyes has been a member of NRB for more than 40 years, and has served on the NRB Executive Committee. He is also now in his 20th year of service on the NRB Board of Directors. Furthermore, he has served in several very influential organizations that serve the Latin American community in the United States, such as Esperanza USA, AMEN, NOAH, and COMHINA, among others.
Dr. Reyes was part of the Billy Graham Puerto Rico Committee for the Global Crusade in 1998. In 1992 and 2002, he was selected by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to be part of The Lausanne Movement. Moreover, he is a member of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ)’s Board of Directors. On four occasions, he has been a guest of the Israel Tourist Office for the production of Spanish television programs in Israel. Dr. Reyes loves Israel and its people, so he has shared this love with those among the 29 different pilgrimage groups who have traveled with him to the Holy Land.
Today, Dr. Reyes is Founder and President of the nonprofit organization El Pan de Vida, Inc., a ministry that has provided assistance to people in need of food and shelter in countries such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and several other countries, as well as Hispanic communities in the U.S.
Dr. Reyes’ speaking engagements have taken him to more than 71 countries in the world, and thousands of people have been saved through his preaching-teaching ministry. He is also a prolific writer, having written 15 books that accompany his teaching series, which have been a great blessing to the Hispanic community.
Presently, Dr. Reyes is in the process of establishing a bilingual School of Communications, which will serve not only the Spanish speaking people in Central Florida and the United States, but also will provide training throughout Latin America. Dr. Reyes has blessed thousands of people, and he is counting on having many more years of sharing the truth of the Gospel by God’s grace, and to lead the way so others can be trained to do the same, using mass media.
In his many years of service, Dr. Reyes has been recognized by the Puerto Rican government, the state of New York, and several local Christian and civic organizations. In addition to his responsibilities as Program Producer and Speaker, he is presently the Vice President of the Fellowship of Pastors for the city of Kissimmee in Florida, where he is a pastor of a growing church. Dr. Reyes has always used mass media as a tool for the church to engage in evangelism and discipleship. Due to this vision, he has helped in the establishing around 40 local churches, using radio and television as the first contact with non-believers to bring them to the knowledge of Christ as Savior.
He has shared his life and ministry with his wife of 49 years, Olfa, who has been his source of encouragement. She has also served as a partner and co-worker, having been the radio program producer and assistant in the production of his television program.
Dr. Reyes has well spent these 50 years of his life working for God and His Kingdom as a faithful servant. He has followed Christ’s example and has put into practice the words of Apostle Paul, who said, “And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you …” (2 Cor. 12:15). This has been Dr. Reyes’ practice during his 50 years of service to his Lord.
