Trustees of the International Mission Board overwhelmingly elected Dr. David Platt, Pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, AL, to serve as their organization’s 12th president.
Dr. Platt, who will be a keynote speaker at the NRB 2015 International Christian Media Convention, is the youngest person to lead IMB, an entity of the Southern Baptist Convention and the largest evangelical missionary-sending organization in America. He succeeds Tom Elliff, who earlier this year announced his intention to retire once a replacement was found.
"David Platt has a passion for the nations second to none,” remarked Dr. Jerry A. Johnson, President & CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), of which IMB is a member.
“He also has a solid track record of missionary experience,” added Dr. Johnson, who is a Southern Baptist himself. “I believe Southern Baptists will be blessed under his leadership to obey the Great Commission with new zeal."
In addition to serving as Pastor of The Church at Brook Hills, Dr. Platt has traveled extensively to teach the Bible and to equip church leaders throughout the United States and around the world. He has authored several books, including Radical - Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, Radical Together - Unleashing the People of God for the Purpose of God, and Follow Me: A Call to Die, A Call to Live.
More recently, Dr. Platt founded Radical, a resource ministry dedicated to serving the Church by making disciples of all nations.
Previously, he has served at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary as Dean of Chapel and Assistant Professor of Expository Preaching and Apologetics, and as Staff Evangelist at Edgewater Baptist Church in New Orleans.
Dr. Platt took office immediately after his election last week.
