More than 130 media producers from the United States and several Spanish-speaking countries met in Miami earlier this month for the first-ever ComunicadoresUSA Hispanic Media Summit.
Moreover, nearly half the participants became members of ComunicadoresUSA, supporting the initiative to “connect, equip and train Christian communicators to be more effective in their profession, ministry and calling.”
“We have certainly accomplished our objective of bringing communicators together to catch the excitement of our vision,” reported members of the ComunicadoresUSA Executive Committee, which includes CBN News Producer Stan Jeter; Mark Gallardo, Director of the CVCLAVOZ radio network; Marie Tamayo, Director of Eventers; Darrell Eash, President of Sound & Screen; and Steve Cordon, President of the Vertical Link media agency.
“The enthusiasm we felt at the summit reiterated the need for Hispanics to be trained in the areas of radio, television and the social media,” they added.
Established four years ago after a meeting of veteran broadcasters and representatives of major ministries including Focus on the Family, the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) and In Touch Ministries, ComunicadoresUSA seeks to gather resources and volunteers to train, network and support Hispanic Christians using mass media.
The association recognizes that Hispanics are not only the largest minority group in the United States, but their evangelical churches are a growing force in our nation, both in numbers and influence. Furthermore, while Hispanics don’t lack media vision, many do lack broadcast training and experience and are looking for ways to use the media more effectively.
“They’re bi-cultural and bi-lingual, and as skilled as anyone with the social media,” said Stan Jeter, ComunicadoresUSA’s President and a member of the NRB Board of Directors.
At the May 1 summit in Miami, participants heard from presenters including Hollywood producer Dr. Phil Cooke; Dr. Antony Portigliatti, President of Florida Christian University; Pedro Javier González, a Vice-President of Univision Radio; international television producer Craig Forrest; and author and lecturer Dr. Jeffery De León.
Dr. Frank Wright, NRB’s President & CEO, also spoke to those gathered, expressing support for the new association of Hispanic Christian broadcasters and challenging them to become a part of ComunicadoresUSA’s vision.
Arnold Enns, President of COICOM, NRB’s sister organization in Latin America, similarly affirmed his support for the Hispanic media initiative.
Furthermore, the organizers of Expolit, a major Hispanic Christian bookseller’s convention, expressed their satisfaction with the summit, which was held in association with Exploit 2013.
“ComunicadoresUSA blends perfectly with the vision of our event,” said Marie Tamayo, Coordinator of Expolit. “In addition, witnessing the beginning of what promises to be a great organization is very rewarding. The comments we heard about what people experienced at the Summit surpassed our expectations.”
According to ComunicadoresUSA, the association is launching a robust website with news and training content, and plans to hold local and regional meetings in cities with large Hispanic populations, followed by a second Media Summit in Miami on April 30, 2014.
“From now until the next summit, we will utilize the web and regional gatherings to keep connecting communicators and broadening our training capabilities,” explained Jeter.
The vision of ComunicadoresUSA is for “transformed communicators to transform communities.”
